Well known weather personality, and “Today” show co-host Al Roker had some chilling for Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin. While delivering the forecast on Wednesday, January 30 edition of “MSNBC Live with Craig Melvin,” the usually jovial Roker unloaded on Bevin for saying “we’re getting soft” as a country for canceling school amid bone-chilling temperatures this week.
“By the way, I just have to say, this nitwit governor from Kentucky saying, ‘Oh, we’re weak,'” Roker said. “These are kids who are going to be in subzero wind chills. No! Cancel school. Stop it, you know?”
“Adults, if they want to be out there, that’s great,” he added. “These are our children, you know? I’m glad you’re not a teacher.”
Governor Bevin Defends His Comments
Governor Bevin made the controversial comments during an interview on a local Kentucky radio station, where he said to host Terry Meiners that America is “getting soft” for closing schools during the extreme cold that has gripped the country this week even as wind chills in his state have dipped low enough to cause frostbite in 30 minutes.
When Meiners gave Bevin a chance to walk back the comment by responding, “It’s deep freeze; this is serious business…”
Bevin interrupted the host saying, “Come on, now. There’s no ice going with it or any snow. What happened to America? We’re getting soft, Terry, we’re getting soft.”
However the Governor did then say that he meant the comment mostly as tongue-in-cheek, following with, “It’s better to air on the side of being safe, and I am facetious, but it does concern me a little bit that in America on this, and any number of other fronts, we’re sending messages to our young people that if life is hard you can curl up in the fetal position in a warm place and just wait until it stops being hard.”
On the day the Governor made the comments, wind chill temperatures in some parts of northern Kentucky dipped to nearly 40 degrees below zero. According to the National Weather Service, at those temperatures, frostbite could occur on any areas of exposed skin in just 30 minutes.
Perhaps the Governor was not aware that The Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes that children’s unique physiology makes them more susceptible to extreme temperatures because they are less able to regulate their body temperature than adults, and are therefore at far higher risk of frostbite. Or perhaps he just chose a wrong time to engage in the kind of “old man” hyperbole that we had all heard our dad’s utter before, “when I was you’re age, I had to walk three miles to school, in six feet of snow, with no shoes…”
But in either case, The Kentucky Education Association said in a tweet Wednesday that it fully backed the decision to keep students at home.
“We will always support decisions made for the health and safety of Kentucky’s children,” the teachers’ union wrote. “Always.”
Self-professed “trickster” Roger Stone, who has just pleaded not guilty to seven charges laid out by special counsel Robert Mueller, has accused CNN of conspiring with the Mueller investigation in producing “great footage” depicting him as “some sort of criminal” in order to “taint the jury pool.” He offered these remarks during an interview on SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow on Tuesday January 29.
Stone was recounting to Marlow the recent events when he was arrested by FBI agents at his home in Fort Lauderdale with a CNN production team close behind.
Stone continued, “They then took me to the federal courthouse in Fort Lauderdale where I was shackled, hand and foot, in heavy metal shackles, and put in a holding cell for three hours with three African-American gentlemen who, by the way, all support President Trump’s recent justice reform package, and I waited to go in front of a judge who released me on the bond that we’ve discussed.”
Stone went on, “So this was meant to do two things. One, to taint the jury pool, to paint a picture for the American people that I’m some sort of criminal, even though I’m charged with non-violent process crimes, and also to send a message to others.”
CNN, of course in no friend of the Trump administration, nor of Stone apparently. On the day of the raid, CNN’s Jake Tapper said of Stone’s possible imprisonment, “He might like it.”
Lies and Death Threats
Stone went on to tell Marlow “Reading the indictment, there are several people who are preparing to lie on behalf of the Mueller investigation and bear false witness against me.”
He also said, that thanks to CNN’s slanted reporting, he and his family have been harassed and have even received death threats. “The hatred, the death threats, the threats against my children, the threats to disfigure my wife,” said Stone. “I’ve had people call the house and say, ‘We know where your children go to school,’ and hang up. The left is sick in this country. They are mentally ill.” He continued, “For two years, now, I’ve been unable to go out in public to a restaurant or through an airport without ugliness and people threatening to kill me and people saying, ‘You’re a Russian spy.’
Stone also said that he had “gone broke” defending himself from Mueller’s accusations, and he Breitbart’s readers to support his legal defense fund. “I had to set up a legal defense fund: StoneDefenseFund.com,” said Stone. “Or you can go to WhoFramedRogerStone.com. They both go lead to the same place. That’s the only authorized place if you want to help me and my family.”
Stone concluded, “This isn’t about me. It’s about the president. They’re coming for him. Anybody who doesn’t see that is naive, and they want me out of the way because I will speak out against it.”
All the hysteria on both sides over President Trump’s decision to provide an intermission in the government shutdown versus border barrier funding is misplaced. This game is not over, and neither side should be calling the outcome.
This was not – at least not yet – a capitulation on the part of the President. As I opined in other commentaries, Trump may have seen this as bringing the shutdown back from the edge of crisis, getting the federal workers pay up to day and appearing to be flexible on portions of the standoff. He could also get his State of the Union Speech rescheduled. If House Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to stonewall the wall and refuse to negotiate in good faith, it could leave her and the Democrats in a more vulnerable position in the next round.
On a more ominous note, there have been widespread reports that Trump’s support in the Senate was about to collapse – meaning that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would allow a Continuing Resolution (CR) bill to go for a vote without Trump’s $5.7 billion – and that there were sufficient Republican defectors to override a presidential veto. That may be more wishful thinking on the part of the press than a reality. Despite the reports, no more than one or two senators seemed to be open to bolting on the issue.
Unless Trump had compelling information that he was losing Senate Republicans, he was mistaken to call off the shutdown – even temporarily. Yes, the problems were growing, and the pressure was building, but that is exactly what Trump needed to redirect the pressure onto Pelosi and the House Democrats – and least 19 of the 235 of them to vote with the House Republicans on a bill that included the $5.7 billion Trump requested.
So, what is the path forward for Trump?
The first consideration is what Trump should NOT do. He should not declare a national emergency. He should even stop threatening it. He does not get a clear win out of that because the action itself would be controversial. He would be taking appropriated money from other departments and agencies, and that is a problem. Also, the issue would drag on for some time in the federal courts. It is likely he would win that legal battle at the Supreme Court level, but things would be needlessly chaotic in the interim.
It is not an issue as to whether he has the power to declare a national emergency. He does. Every recent president has declared them – and often for issue far less serious than border security. We are currently living under 31 national declarations of emergency – one going all the way back to President Carter.
If Pelosi & Co. refuse his money for border barriers – the metaphoric wall – Trump essentially has only one choice – let the government shut down again and this time it stays shut until he gets enough Dems to say “uncle.”
Trump was getting closer to that point before he agreed to a short-term reprieve. The chant, “give him his money” was growing in the public and even among left-wingers. Re-opening the government unfortunately put off the day of reckoning and moved things closer to the 2020 election – that period in American politics where nothing rational is likely to happen.
And what about the issue of McConnell and the Senate GOP crumbling? If there desertion of the President is really a possibility, Trump has already lost the battle. In some ways, he may have been better off to let that play out during the shutdown. At least he would not have gotten the blame for caving.
The reason that I believe that enough senators will not actually override a Trump veto is because those that do drop their re-election chances to the low double digits.
So, there ‘tis.
Earlier this week on Tuesday, Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron, two of continental Europe’s preeminent globalist politicians and cocksure leaders, met in the ancient western German city of Aachen and signed a new Franco-German friendship treaty which Merkel has said ‘’contributes to the creation of a European army’.
The signing of this new treaty solidifies both Macron and Merkel’s firm commitment to globalist ideology and ending the notion of national sovereignty.
During a press conference, the German Chancellor stated that the pact seeks to construct a ‘common military culture’ between to two countries. She also called for the creation of a European Security Council which would act similarly to that of the Security Council of the United Nations. The council would be responsible for streamlining defense policy across the continent.
Macron and Merkel both seem to think that if they can raise a Franco-German-led EU army, that this will somehow protect them against the unrelenting tide of populism coming from the Visegrád countries (Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia), Austria, and now Italy. The two couldn’t be any more mistaken.
Recent polls taken in both Germany and France suggest that the centrist, corporatist, globalist style of government that Merkel and Macron both promote is on its way out.
The people want national populism.
According to an Ifop poll that was taken in September – before the yellow vest protests began to mind you – only 29 percent of French citizens said they support Macron. This number has surely dropped since the yellow vest protests originally commenced in mid-November. In another poll conducted by Ifop, national populist Marine Le Pen from the National Rally party had more popular support than Macron.
So, if Macron and Merkel are going to attempt to raise a Franco-German-led European Army, they had better do it quickly because both leaders will more than likely be gone soon.
During the press conference that went on before the two leaders met behind closed doors, the German Chancellor warned against the rising nationalist sentiment spreading across the European continent.
Last year, Merkel unabashedly stated that ‘nation-states should be willing to give up their sovereignty today’ and this should be carried out in an ‘orderly fashion.’ This statement alone is more than enough to show how disconnected from ordinary people she has become.
This new Franco-German Treaty has drawn harsh criticism from many Western leaders.
US President Donald Trump immediately denounced the idea of creating an EU army. In a tweet, he said, ‘Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the U.S., China, and Russia. But it was Germany in World Wars One & Two – How did that work out for France? They were starting to learn German in Paris before the U.S. came along. Pay for NATO or not!’
The former leader of UKIP and diehard Brexiteer, Nigel Farage replied to Merkel’s speech, saying her comments only made him happier to be leaving the EU.
Gavin Williamson, British Defense Secretary and member of the Conservative party also denounced Merkel and Macron’s desire for a European army as an ‘absolutely crazy idea’ that would inevitably undermine peace and security on the continent.
A Polish member of the European Parliament, Ryszard Legutko, accused the supposedly center-right Angela Merkel as being identical to leftwing socialist politicians in Germany.
As the pro-globalist governments of France and Germany become increasingly isolated on the European continent, we should only expect their disconnected belligerence to increase until their people dispose of them like the trash that they are.
And as we’ve seen in France with the Mouvement des gilent jaunes (the yellow vest movement), this process is already well underway.
Maduro Orders Overhaul of Venezuela-US Relation After VP Pence Urges Anti-Communist Opposition Movement to Overthrow the Dictator
On Tuesday, January 22, 2019, following a video released by the U.S. Vice President where he expressed support for the Venezuelan anti-communist opposition movement and urged them to overthrow the ‘dictator,’ Maduro ordered a total revision of US-Venezuelan diplomatic relations.
The video was released just a day ahead of planned nationwide mass street demonstrations, organized by the anti-communist opposition led by the leader of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó. In Pence’s videotaped message where he speaks directly to the Venezuelan people, he denounces Maduro as ‘a dictator with no legitimate claim to power’ who has ‘never won the presidency in a free and fair election.’
Pence continued, saying, “The United States supports the courageous decision by Juan Guaidó, the president of National Assembly, to assert that body’s constitutional powers, declare Maduro a usurper and call for the establishment of a transitional government.”
VP Pence explicitly expressed to the 35-year-old anti-communist opposition leader that he and his followers have the support of the United States.
Only a few hours after Pence’s address, Maduro took to state TV and decried the speech as nothing less than flagrant and arrant meddling by the US into Venezuelan internal affairs. Madura added that Pence’s authorization of and support for a coup against him brought US-Venezuelan relations at a historic 200-year low.
Although the U.S. still maintains its embassy in the Venezuelan capital city of Caracas, it has been almost a decade since the two countries have exchanged ambassadors.
Maduro, a former bus driver, began his second term after he was ‘elected’ in May of 2018. The United States, the European Union, and an extensive collection of Latin American countries have referred to the election as illegitimate and a fraud.
Brazil’ newly elected President Jair Bolsonaro has expressed that his government would take any action ‘within the rule of law and democracy’ to oppose Madura’s authoritarian communist government.
Maduro initially assumed the powers and responsibilities of the President following the death of Hugo Chávez in 2013. Since he took control of the country, the socioeconomic status of Venezuela has plunged while crime, hunger, poverty, shortages of medicine, and inflation have all become rampant. The current situation in Venezuela is utterly dismal.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted that inflation in the country is set to reach 10 million percent this year. The United Nations (UN) has reported that the number of refugees feeling Venezuela has now reached three million – a staggering figure considering the country is composed of just 30 million. That means 10 percent of the country’s total population has fled to surrounding Latin American states.
After two decades under communist rule, the situation in Venezuela seems to be headed towards some tipping point. When exactly and what that will look like – remains to be seen.
Despite a continued government shut down, one thing that has not been put on hold is the 2020 quest for the White House. In a highly speculative Democratic field, the first official bid for the nomination has been announced by Democratic Senator from California, Kamala Harris.
Harris told the press that the theme of her campaign will be “For the People,” and she is expected to formally announce her candidacy in a speech on Jan. 27 in Oakland, California. The senator previewed her announcement in an interview on a recent broadcast of ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
It what is now an obvious precursor to her run, Harris recently published a memoir, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, which espoused many of the messages she is expected to focus on during her campaign. In the book, she describes her upbringing in Oakland as a daughter of immigrants from India and Jamaica, and her personal history of advancing from prosecutor, to district attorney, to senator.
Elected to the Senate in 2016, Harris made history as the first Indian-American to serve in the body, as well as the second black woman to ever serve. As attorney general of California for six years, she was the first woman, the first African-American and the first Indian-American in that role – so it should come as no surprise that she made her announcement on Martin Luther King Day.
Odds Favor Trump
President Trump has been a long-time critic of Harris as he has of all of the current Democratic front runners, and fears little of the challenge presented by her announcement to run in 2020. Odds makers would seem to agree.
According to BetOnline.ag, Harris, and her most likely contender for the Democratic nomination, Beto O’Rourke, are tied at 8-to-1 odds to win the presidency. President Trump has the edge, which he has maintained for months despite the government shut down, with 7-to-4 odds, said BetOnline.
The betting site did say however, that Harris has been the Democrat bet on the most on the site, “showing strong interest in her candidacy.”
BetOnline.ag’s sportsbook brand manager, Dave Mason said, “Kamala Harris has been the most bet Democrat to date, with Biden close behind.” Former Vice President Biden has not yet formally declared his candidacy.
Trump has been a strong critic of Senator Harris, particularly regarding her liberal stance on immigration, at one time tweeting, “.@SenKamalaHarris, why are you supporting the animals of MS-13? You must not know what ICE really does…”
Roger Stone, former Trump advisor and close confidant of popular radio host Alex Jones, was arrested yesterday on the 24th of January in Florida on a seven-count indictment brought by Robert Mueller’s special counsel.
The counts include obstruction, making false statements, and witness tampering.
The arrest, which wasn’t exactly a surprise, occurred early Friday morning. For a while now, Stone has said that he had been expecting the indictment to come.
At the heart of the indictments are allegations that Stone endeavored to pass messages to the head of Wikileaks, Julian Assange through a middleman, then obstructed Mueller’s investigation into those particular contacts. The indictment identifies two associates: A political commentator (Person 1), and a radio-host (Person 2), who Stone supposedly asked to pass information to Assange. Assange has been living inside of the Ecuadorian embassy as since 2012. He is a political prisoner.
Stone is a well-known political operative inside of Republican party. He and Trump have known each other for close to 40 years now. The indictment of Stone marks special counsel Mueller’s most significant move to date against an associate of Trump.
Stone has never denied having communicated with Wikileaks Julian Assange. In August of 2016 at a GOP forum in South Florida, Stone said, ‘I actually have communicated with Assange… I believe the next tranche of his documents pertains to the Clinton Foundation, but there’s no telling what the October surprise may be.’
Stone has also publicly acknowledged that he had been in communication with the hacker known by the online handle Guccifer 2.0., a hacker who hacked into the Democratic National Committee’s computer network and leaked its secret documents to the media. Deep state operatives consider Guccifer 2.0 as merely a front for the SVR RF (Russian Intelligence).
Stone is scheduled to appear at a federal courthouse at 11 AM ET on Friday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
What do Justice Ginsburg, Donald Trump and Catholic school boys have in common?
Answer: They have all been disserved by irresponsible – and even reckless – media reporting.
The first was an embarrassing accident by FOX News. They put up a graphic that suggested the demise of ailing Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It was one of those screens that show the image of a person, their name and TWO dates – in this case “1933 – 2019.”: It is the iconic television graphic associated with the death of a prominent person.
The existence of the graphic should come as no surprise. Media outlets – both print and electronic – have “canned” obituaries for virtually every major personality – especially those of advanced ages.
For the most part, it was a harmless and even laughable mistake. When an American newspaper published an obituary on novelist Mark Twain – believing he had died during a trip to London – Twain famously told a reporter, “The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”
However, this blunder pales compared to the following examples of malicious media mischief.
Donald Trump victimized by fake news
The report involving President Trump was not so funny – nor accidental. A bogus article in BuzzFeed claimed that not only would former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen be testifying that the President ordered him to lie to Congress about the status of Trump Organization discussions about a project in Moscow, but the report claimed that Special Counsel Robert Mueller had corroboration in the form of emails, text messages, testimony of others and tons of documents.
Even though no other news service – with all their resources – could confirm the story, they made it the lead for the next 24 hours. It was deemed to be conclusive proof of obstruction of justice by suborning perjury. It was clearly impeachable, they opined – and the calls for impeachment rose from the Democrat side of Congress.
The report was so bad that Mueller had to issue an extraordinary statement that the report in totality was inaccurate … untrue … fake news. Even with that, many Trump-hating analysts persisted in claiming the BuzzFeed report could be Accurate.
Catholic students smeared in media propaganda
In one of the most vicious – and yet successful – examples of left-wing media propaganda was the attack on the students from Covington Catholic High School attending a pro-life rally. Initial reports used an EDITED video to make it appear that the students were badgering an older Native American man, Nathan Phillips. The #NeverTrump press then called on their sycophantic panels to pile on.
It was a natural confrontation for the biased media to spin. On one side you had mostly white Christian students from a southern state protesting against abortion with some wearing the Trump MAGA hats. On the other side, you had one of the left’s premier protected classes, an older Native American.
This was a situation ripe for the left-wing propagandists – and they played it for maximum value, making it a lead story hour after hour. The distorted excessive and hyperbolic coverage then spread through social media in nanoseconds – resulting in an outpouring of vulgar and hateful threats against the targeted students.
Fortunately, America still has enough independent and ethical journalism and the truth did surface. Contrary to the narrative of the anti-Trump press, it was the Catholic students who were confronted by the drum-beating Indian activist. In addition, a contingent from Black Hebrew Israelites had been yelling at both the Catholic students and Phillips – something that was omitted from the edited broadcast version.
The provoked hatred against these students – not unlike the Nazi press attacks on Jews before World War II – resulted in a flood of death threats against individual students and their families, and threats of arson and mass shooting against the school population. And all because the elitist media has intentionally, willfully and happily spread vicious propaganda.
There is a reason why most Americans do not trust the major news media. In fact, most polls show the public trust level to be below that of Trump and of Congress. The New York Times, CNN, MSNBC are running advertising trying to sell themselves as the purveyors of “truth.” Of course, they would not have to try to convince the public if they were really telling the truth.
So, there ‘tis.
Once more, for the Nth time, the lying international mainstream press has reaffirmed that they are without a doubt the enemy of the people.
Again, outlets like CNN, The Guardian, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Huffington Post, Buzzfeed, The Daily Beast, and others have shown the American public and the people of the world that they have nothing but utter contempt for the truth.
Last Friday, following the anti-abortion March for Life procession in Washington D.C., students from Covington Catholic High School gathered outside of the Lincoln Memorial while waiting for school buses to pick them up to go home.
That’s when the trouble began.
The lying mainstream media’s narrative of the event went something like this. A large group overly aggressive, MAGA hat-wearing boys preemptively swarmed an innocent, elderly American-Indian activist by the name Nathan Phillips. A short video clip then showed what the lying mainstream press described as a teenage boy in a Make America Great Again hat staring-down Phillips as his buddies mocked the man in the background.
What ensued in the next few hours was nothing less than an orgy of hate which leftists and NeverTrumpers were more than happy to indulge themselves in. Media pundits and prominent public figures didn’t hesitate to call for violence against the boys.
Leftist Hollywood filmmaker Jack Morrisey expressed in a tweet that the MAGA hat-wearing boys should be killed, saying, “MAGAkids go screaming, hats first, into the woodchipper.”
Reza Aslan, a former CNN contributor, tweeted a picture of Nick Sandmann, the boy who stood up to Phillips, alongside text which read, “Have you ever seen a more punchable face than this kids.”
CNN’s Anna Navaro called the boys ‘racist’ and ‘ass wipes.’
Bakari Sellers, a CNN legal analyst, said that the boy should be punched in the face.
Maggy Haderman from the New York Times has suggested that these boys be expelled from school.
Disgraced Comedian Kathy Griffin also took to twitter saying, “Name these kids. I want NAMES. Shame them. If you think these f***ers would dox you in a heartbeat, think again.”
Meanwhile, Twitter, which claims to have an explicit policy of against encouraging violence, stood by silent. Apparently, as long as the encouragement of violence is directed at conservatives, it’s okay.A few days later, on Sunday, additional video footage of the incident surfaced which provided an entirely more accurate view of the events that occurred that day.
The new footage revealed that while the group of high school students waited for their bus near the Lincoln Memorial, they were confronted by a black supremacist group who call themselves the Black Hebrew Israelites. Members from this group yelled racial epithets at the group of high school students, calling them ‘crackers’ and ‘incest babies.’
To drown out the vitriolic filth spewing from the mouths of these ‘Black Hebrew Israelites,’ the MAGA hat-wearing the boys began performing loud high school sports chants. The chants weren’t directed at anyone, and nothing violent or aggressive was being said.
While this was happening, Nathan Philips, the now famous American-Indian, directly approached Nick Sandmann, got up in his face, and proceeded to bang his tom-tom drum inches away from Sandmann’s face.
It’s evident to any honest person who watches the video that Sandmann showed remarkable restraint. It’s also clear that he did absolutely nothing to provoke the actions to direct against him.
On Monday, Trump, in a tweet, extended his sympathy and support to Nick Sandmann and other Covington Catholic high school students.
Looking like Nick Sandman & Covington Catholic students were treated unfairly with early judgements proving out to be false – smeared by media. Not good, but making big comeback! “New footage shows that media was wrong about teen’s encounter with Native American” @TuckerCarlson
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 22, 2019
Again on Tuesday, Trump took to Twitter and expanded on his thoughts concerning the fake news coverage of the incident. He wrote, Nick Sandmann and the students of Covington have become symbols of Fake News and how evil it can be. They have captivated the attention of the world, and I know they will use it for the good — maybe even to bring people together. It started unpleasant, but can end in a dream!”
Congressman Thomas Massie praised the boys in a tweet, “In the face of racist and homosexual slurs, the young boys refused to reciprocate or disrespect anyone.” He added that he was proud to be the representatives of these boys.
So, what can we take away from the corporate media’s latest attempt sell the people a pack of lies deliberately concocted to demonize a very particular demographic of people?
Well, it’s obvious that this was nothing short than a brazen attempt by to paint Catholic, Caucasian, MAGA hat-wearing students as evil racist bigots.
This story is also an indictment of the mainstream press. It is now clear that when the facts do not add up to support whatever liberal politicians and corporate press think they know to be true, the facts suddenly become irrelevant. Their false narrative is the only thing that matters.
Lastly, this story reaffirms what all honest and thinking people already know to be true. Namely, that the lying corporate press is an enemy of the people and needs to be abolished, and abolish it we will.
For over two years now, President Trump has railed against so-called “Fake News,” and it seems that this time he may have been right!
Recently the mainstream media, and especially fervent Trump advisary, CNN, were all over a story put out by BuzzFeed, that claimed it had evidence that Michael Cohen was directly coerced by Trump to lie to Congress. Cohen, was sentenced to 3 years in prison for that federal offence, and he has since been cooperating with Robert Mueller’s investigation ever since.
Mueller, who has rarely commented during the course of his investigation, broke his usual silence to throw shade on the BuzzFeed report, “BuzzFeed’s description of specific statements to the Special Counsel’s Office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen’s Congressional testimony are not accurate,” Mueller spokesman Peter Carr said in a statement to the news site.
Buzzfeed Holds It’s Ground
While Trump and his supporters are having a field day with Mueller’s rejection of the report, BuzzFeed, thus far, is standing by the story. In a tweet following the release of Carr’s statement, BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith tweeted, “In response to the statement tonight from the Special Counsel’s spokesman: We stand by our reporting and the sources who informed it, and we urge the Special Counsel to make clear what he’s disputing…”
This despite the fact that no other major news outlet has been able to corroborate the story, including CNN, which of course, was one of the first networks to jump all over it.
According to the original BuzzFeed story, “two federal law enforcement officials involved in an investigation of the matter” allegedly told the media outlet, “that Cohen also told the special counsel that after the election, the president personally instructed him to lie…”
The report went on to say, “The special counsel’s office learned about Trump’s directive for Cohen to lie to Congress through interviews with multiple witnesses from the Trump Organization and internal company emails, text messages, and a cache of other documents. Cohen then acknowledged those instructions during his interviews with that office.”
Smith has been urging Mueller’s office to clarify its statement, and to point out exactly what it is that the Special Counsel is claiming that the news site got wrong. However, that’s probably not going to happen until Mueller’s final report on the investigation is completed.
Speaking from the White House lawn in response to both the BuzzFeed report, and the Special Counsel’s rejection of it, President Trump called the original, a “total phony story.” He then went on to say, “I appreciate the Special Counsel coming out with a statement last night. I think that the BuzzFeed piece was a disgrace to our country. It was a disgrace to journalism…I think it’s going to take a long time for the mainstream media to recover its credibility.”
“It hurts me to say it, but mainstream media has totally lost its credibility,” he concluded.
Trump attorney and controversial mouthpiece, Rudy Giuliani blamed the story on the “Deep State.”
“BuzzFeed story is acknowledged #FAKENEWS and comes from so-called federal law enforcement, Deep State. Maybe time to say there’s a real danger to our rights here if we keep let this happening,” he tweeted.
Cohen, 52, is expected to begin a three-year prison sentence in March after pleading guilty to federal financial crimes, campaign finance violations and lying to Congress, which was at the heart of the BuzzFeed story.
