YouTube announced it will start removing any videos that are posted Wednesday or later that question the 2020 election results based on claims of “widespread fraud or errors.”
The platform said that any video stating that the 2020 election outcome was affected by “widespread fraud or errors” would be deleted from the platform unless “sufficient” context is provided.
“Yesterday was the safe harbor deadline for the U.S. Presidential election and enough states have certified their election results to determine a President-elect. Given that, we will start removing any piece of content uploaded today (or anytime after) that misleads people by alleging that widespread fraud or errors changed the outcome of the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, in line with our approach towards historical U.S. Presidential elections,” YouTube said in a blog post. “For example, we will remove videos claiming that a Presidential candidate won the election due to widespread software glitches or counting errors. We will begin enforcing this policy today, and will ramp up in the weeks to come. As always, news coverage and commentary on these issues can remain on our site if there’s sufficient education, documentary, scientific or artistic context.”
This announcement comes as legal challenges over the election results are still working through the courts. The Trump campaign filed a challenge to Georgia’s election results last week.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit in the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday against Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. He argued that those states should not be allowed to vote in the electoral college because of alleged violations of election law. The court ordered the defendants to respond by Thursday. President Trump announced on Wednesday morning that the Trump administration would be joining the lawsuit to support Texas.
