Texas Deploys National Guard to Help at Border

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) is sending 500 National Guard troops and 1,200 state police officers to assist border patrol agents as they struggle to manage an influx of migrants.

“We will work to step up and try to fill the gap that the federal government is leaving open by making sure we deploy every resource, whether it be Department of Public Safety or Texas National Guard, whatever we need to do,” said Abbott Tuesday during a press conference in Mission. “Texas is going to fight for the safety and security of our state.”

The reinforcements, known as “Operation Lone Star,” will join 3,600 National Guard troops stationed at the border during the Trump Administration.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants – including record numbers of children – have flocked to the US-Mexico border since President Biden’s inauguration. There have been more apprehensions so far this year than in all of 2020. And without adequate housing, border patrol agents have to keep unaccompanied minors in cells meant for adults.

“This crisis is a result of President Biden’s open border policies,” continued Abbott. “It invites illegal immigration and is creating a humanitarian crisis in Texas right now that will grow increasingly worse by the day.”

During his first days in office, President Biden cancelled Trump’s Border Wall and replaced his “Remain in Mexico” policy with a catch-and-release program that relies on migrants to show up to court themselves. According to Texas reporter Valerie Gonzalez, the migrants are not even tested for COVID unless they show symptoms.

“I think there is a challenge at the border that we are managing, and we have our resources dedicated to managing it,” said Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. He is a native of Cuba whose parents fled to Florida after the Cuban Revolution. “The men and women of the Department of Homeland Security are working around the clock, seven days a week, to ensure that we do not have a crisis at the border.”

Experts at the Government Accountability Office say we will need military support at the border for the next three years or more.

Author’s Note: With Biden (and his handlers) in control, the states have to protect themselves. Abbott’s use of the National Guard may exacerbate the political divide, but it will also offer a successful example for other GOP-led states to follow.
